England and Wasps legend Lawrence Dallaglio bemoaned England’s lack of consistency under Eddie Jones, and says it’s hurting them going forward after a relatively toothless display against Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend. Dallaglio was speaking on the Evening Standard’s new rugby podcast in association with London Pride when he made the comments.
The 49-year-old said he was “frustrated” as an England fan at the moment and felt that Jones’ constant changing of both the game plan and the personnel involved for the national side was leaving his players “confused”. However, Dallaglio was keen to heap praise on Gregor Townsend’s side as they retained the Calcutta Cup with their 20-17 win over England on Saturday.
Dallaglio was joined on his latest venture into the podcasting world by Wales and Lions legend Scott Quinnell, BBC Radio Leicester journalist Adam Whitty and the Evening Standard’s very own cricket and rugby correspondent Will Macpherson (who joked his job these days was mainly to watch England lose in various forms).
The crew discussed their highlights of the weekend, with Mack Hansen of Ireland getting particular praise, as well as the Scottish trio of Ben White, Finn Russell and Darcy Graham for their nail-biting victory over their oldest rivals in tricky conditions in Edinburgh.
However, there was some criticism for how slow the French were in getting going in Paris during their 37-10 win over Italy, with the team in agreement that they can’t afford such a sluggish start when Andy Farrell’s men come to visit this weekend in what some are already dubbing a championship decider. And Quinnell was magnanimous in his praise for the Irish after they put in the performance of the weekend to beat Wales 29-7 and continue their imperious form from the Autumn.
