England ratings vs Spain: Harry Kane rues penalty miss as defender scores 3/10

England 2-3 Spain - (Getty)

England lost the first game of their Nations League campaign as Spain came from behind to win 3-2 at Wembley.

The world champions went ahead early through Lamine Yamal but trailed at the interval when Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane, via a deflection, netted for England.

But Kane then hit the bar with a penalty, and Spain came roaring back to win thanks to goals from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal.

Dom Smith was at Wembley to rate the England players’ performances…

James Trafford 5

Out of his goal decisively to make an early save but conceded three times and was not always on song with his distribution.

Jarell Quansah 5

Joined in with attacks and was generally solid. Headed over the bar with a decent chance.

Ezri Konsa 4

Part of an England backline that shipped three goals, and didn’t cover himself in glory.

Marc Guehi 3

Not a good night from the Manchester City man, whose terrible backpass gifted Yamal the opener in the second minute. Booked.

Nico O’Reilly 5

Did OK and used his physicality when he needed to. Shown a yellow card for a foul.

Elliot Anderson 5

Worked very hard but Spain too easily bypassed him in midfield.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 6

Fitted in well in midfield, a physical presence who also got a couple of shots off.

Bukayo Saka 6

Worked incredibly hard, making space to shoot a number of times and coming close to

Jude Bellingham 8

The best player on the pitch, alongside Yamal. Assisted Gordon, won the penalty Kane missed, and was absolutely everywhere.

Anthony Gordon 7

A constant thorn in Spain’s side, the Barcelona winger ran them ragged and scored England’s fantastic equaliser when he ran through and calmly converted.

Harry Kane 5

Scored his first career goal against Spain to put England ahead with a heavily deflected header but was unable to make it 3-1, slipping at the crucial moment and hitting a penalty against the bar, uncharacteristically.

Subs:

James Garner (Lewis-Skelly, 70’) 5

Found himself in an unfamiliar position late on and his cross was poor.

Morgan Rogers (Rogers, 70’) 4

Didn’t manage to make much of an impact when he came on, despite intense pressing. One very poor cross ballooned out of play.

Morgan Gibbs-White (Saka, 83’) N/A

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Kane, 83’) N/A

Jarred Branthwaite (Guehi, 89’) N/A

Not used: Pickford, Steele, Alexander-Arnold, Scott, Chalobah, Hall, Eze
