Justin Langer has been linked with the vacant England head coach job and the ECB are reportedly ready to break the bank to bring him in, after Chris Silverwood's axing on Thursday after his side's humiliating 4-0 defeat in the Ashes.
Langer, who resigned from his role as Australia 's head coach on Saturday, is thought to be one of the candidates England are considering to replace him.
Sir Andrew Strauss, England's interim managing director of men's cricket, admitted he 'wouldn't rule Langer out' of the running, saying: "I know him well.
"On the surface, he's done a very good job of things with the Australian cricket team. So I wouldn't rule him out, but I'm sure there are plenty of others as well."
And, according to a report from the i , England are prepared to break the bank for the Australian and could make Langer their highest-paid head coach ever.
ECB chief executive Tom Harrison has admitted that they are willing to pay big money in order to get the "best coaches available".
He said: "We have to make the right decisions around coaching budgets. Clearly, you are coaching England. We need the best coaches available to do that."
The report states that England's last two coaches, Silverwood and Trevor Bayliss, were paid around £500,000 a year.
Langer, however, was paid somewhere in the region of £900,000 by Australia and England would need to offer him around £1m in order to persuade him to replace Silverwood.
Michael Vaughan has called for England to "go and get" Langer, writing in the Telegraph "I do not see any one else better suited than Langer to crack heads together and bring some tough management to a group of England players who have become too cosy recently.
"Gary Kirsten would be a great candidate as well but if you want one person to come in with a huge point to prove then it is Langer.
"He is an Ashes winner, T20 World Cup winner and knows everything about playing in Australia. Just go and get him."
Matthew Hayden also urged the ECB to appoint Langer, saying: "Sign him up. If he can turn Cricket Australia around in four years, imagine what he could do with England. God help us."
