England candidates to replace Chris Silverwood with head coach facing sack

Chris Silverwood is set to join Ashley Giles in paying the price for the disastrous 4-0 Ashes defeat Down Under.

Mirror Sport understands that Giles’ departure came off the back of recommendations made by a panel headed by predecessor Andrew Strauss that included former England women’s cricketer Lucy Pearson, Durham chief executive Tim Bostock and chairman of the ECB cricket committee Matthew Fleming.

And the panel are understood to have also recommended further changes with Silverwood set to go, as well as assistant coach Graham Thorpe and performance director Mo Bobat.

It will be a chance for a huge reset on the England team with the head coach roles now set to be split between white and red ball cricket.

But who could replace Silverwood? Mirror Sport takes a look at four of the leading candidates.

Currently Australia 's head coach, Langer, could leave his role when his contract expires later this year, despite leading the side to success in the T20 World Cup and the Ashes.

Langer is understood to be high on the ECB wish list to take over as head coach of the Test team in the long term with an interim coach, possibly Alec Stewart, to take charge in the West Indies.

The former South Africa and India head coach has publicly thrown his hat in the ring to replace Silverwood and he would only be interested in coaching the Test team.

Kirsten says the role would be a "lovely project" and he has been under consideration for the job twice before, having previously applied in 2015 and 2019 but losing out to Trevor Bayliss and then Silverwood.

The 53-year-old has expressed an interest in coaching England before, saying the job is "certainly something I would like to look at".

However, he has recently taken on a new role, joining Derbyshire as their Head of Cricket after leaving Sri Lanka.
