England
Freddie Steward Showed the type of inaccuracy that will infuriate Steve Borthwick more than once and made little or no impact in attack. 5
Tommy Freeman A couple of decent moments, but like almost everyone else in white, far from his best day. 6
Ollie Lawrence Did his job by bringing power in the carry and clearly positionally superior at No 13 to the Freeman experiment. 6
Fraser Dingwall Took his try well, but a defensive error allowed Doris’s skill to expose him. Another very indifferent day. 5
Henry Arundell A couple of bright runs, clearly caused concern to Ireland’s defence, but not enough to make a difference. Butchered a promising attack before the break. 6
George Ford On another day might have got away with two dreadful early kicks for corner. Not this time. Lack of composure and accuracy was costly. 4
Alex Mitchell Off injured for Van Poortvliet after 23 minutes. Joined his teammates in largely going backwards. 6
Ellis Genge Big scrummaging and always lively in the loose. He got on top of his opposite number in the shoving contest, but largely overpowered. 6
Luke Cowan-Dickie Hooked early, the fall guy for set-piece struggles. Just two lineouts were lost before half-time, but they were important. 5
Joe Heyes Busy around the pitch, tackling hard and scrummaging powerfully as always. But one of those who fell asleep for Gibson-Park’s opportunistic score. 6
Maro Itoje Carried strongly at times, but a disappointing way to mark his 100th cap. Home fans were desperate for him to enjoy his day: it wasn’t to be. 6
Ollie Chessum Physically influential occasionally, but the efficiency of Ireland’s engine room meant he was unable to make his mark. One shoddy pass. 6
Tom Curry In from the side blatantly before Gibson-Park’s sniping score, failed to smell the danger afterwards. Another outshone by the visitor’s high-energy performance. 5
Ben Earl A couple of physical carries, but knocked on at a key time when England were aiming to mount a second-half comeback. 5
Henry Pollock Thoroughly outshone by Ireland back row. Phenomenal power in contact occasionally, but was shut down efficiently, at least until after his yellow card. 6
Replacements: Jack van Poortvliet (Mitchell 23) Missed a key tackle. 6; Jamie George (Cowan-Dickie 29) Unfussy and efficient as always. 6; Marcus Smith (Seward 39) Lifted crowd with smart offload to set up Dingwall. Looked dangerous. 7; Bevan Rodd (Genge 52) Customary power and dynamism. 7; Guy Pepper (Tom Curry 52) Coughed up a penalty. 5; Alex Coles (Itoje 55) Going backwards along with his teammates. 6; Sam Underhill (Earl 70) Took his try well. 7;Trevor Davison (Heyes 72) n/a
Ireland
Jamie Osborne Applied a quality finish, powering through Guy Pepper, to turn the screw. That summed up Ireland’s superiority. 7
Robert Baloucoune Lightning quick carrying, too many good moments in attack to mention, showed remarkable bravery and effort in defence. 9
Garry Ringrose Ireland’s “glue” player, helped their attacking continuity and kept things running smoothly in midfield. 7
Stuart McCloskey A scything run deep into England’s 22 created the second try. Hunted down Smith after late interception, following a crunching hit on Lawrence. 8
James Lowe Dropped ball after five minutes with try-line beckoning. Poor kick to clear with Ireland under pressure and was swiftly taken off injured. 6
Jack Crowley Brought control and calmness in contrast to his opposite number. Not as influential as Gibson-Park, but he did not need to be. 7
Jamison Gibson-Park World-class and could possibly be 10/10, but for one indifferent early box kick. Sniping runs, enormous work rate to go with sparkling creativity. 9 Player of the match
Jeremy Loughman Not their best day in the scrums, but every player in green contributed to dismantling of the hosts. 7
Dan Sheehan Smashed rucks, scrummaged powerfully, but also demonstrated his accomplished ball skills. A reminder of his phenomenal ability. 7
Tadhg Furlong Genge got on top of him early in the scrums, but he added his considerable bulk to Ireland’s defensive effort, which was magnificent all round. 7
Joe McCarthy Destructive carrying early on helped Ireland to place their foot firmly on English throats and he didn’t let up. Sensational display. 9
James Ryan Did his bit in a tremendous collective effort by the Irish pack, especially in defence, and solid at the set piece. 7
Tadhg Beirne Massive work rate and a constant thorn in English side. Tackled his heart out and bullied his way around the pitch. 7
Josh van der Flier Cleared out breakdown for second try. Tremendously hard-working and brought a cutting edge with his carrying and eye for a gap. 8
Caelan Doris Ridiculously powerful, incisive carry after half-time stamped out threat of England revival. Smart hands at times, too. Physical and intelligent in equal measure. 8
Replacements: Tommy O’Brien (Lowe 19) Fantastic finish for his try. 8; Tom O’Toole (Loughman 46) Fitted in with supreme team effort. 8; Finlay Bealham (Furlong 46) Didn’t help the scrummaging effort. 5; Nick Timoney (Van der Flier 49) Solid and efficient around the park. 7; Ciarán Frawley (Ringrose 54) Didn’t let anyone down. 7; Rónan Kelleher (Sheehan 55) Brought power and experience. 7; Cian Prendergast (McCarthy 62) It helps when you join the action when your teammates are on top. 7; Craig Casey (Gibson-Park 71) Rounded things off smartly 7
