Engineering firm Moog eyes expansion with new £40m Gloucestershire factory

Engineering giant Moog has opened a new £40m aerospace manufacturing and design centre in Gloucestershire.

The global aircraft component and systems maker said its new base in Tewkesbury would allow it to accommodate all aspects of its business under one roof, and provide room for future expansion.

The US company is one of the largest employers in the local area, with around 500 staff based across its operations there. The business said the 209,000 ft floor space in its new facility was two and half times bigger than that currently provided by its three legacy buildings.

Mark Lawton, general manager of Moog’s aircraft control components division, told BusinessLive while the company would need more staff to help with new business it had already secured, it would be “difficult to put an exact figure” on how many jobs would be created, as the firm settles into its new site.

Mr Lawton said: “We are delighted to announce the opening of our new facility and show it off to our family, friends, and external organisations. Our continued success in the marketplace resulted in us outgrowing the premises that we have occupied for over 45 years. Our new facility will more than double in size and allow us to incorporate modern manufacturing practices.”

Business and trade minister Nusrat Ghani said: "This £40m investment in a state-of-the-art facility in Gloucestershire will create jobs, grow the economy, and boost an already thriving aerospace sector here in the UK. Thanks to the work of government, the Aerospace Technology Institute and Innovate UK, we were able to provide over £8m in collaborative R&D funding to develop this ‘Open Source’ Factory of the Future."

Developer and investment firm Barberry Industrial was appointed to the building project in 2020, in what was reported to be one of the biggest deals the industry saw that year.
