Engels delivers instant Celtic vs Rangers 'biggest club' statement in first interview

Arne Engels first met the Scottish media as a Celtic player this afternoon after his record-breaking move to Glasgow.

And in answering his first question, Engels delivered an instant verdict on the difference between Celtic and Rangers.

Asked why he decided to join Celtic, Engels quickly hailed the club as the "biggest in Scotland" as he reflected on making his debut in the 3-0 win over Rangers earlier this month.

"I think it is a really big club and also the biggest club in Scotland," said Engels on his move to Celtic.

"They play every time for the championship and for the league cups and everything so I think it is obvious it is a step forward for me.

"And also with the new format for the Champions League, I think it can be really amazing and special for us.

"Celtic is a club that always wants to play for the championship and the cup.

"It is a good step for me and I am happy to be here. It is a really big club."

Engels - who joined Celtic from Augsburg for a record £11m transfer fee - came off the bench against Rangers on September 1 but was already aware of the magnitude of the fixture.

However, the midfielder, 21, has admitted it surpassed his expectations.

"I think even a bit more," he said of whether the match lived up to expectations. "You hear a lot and know it is a big game against Rangers and that everybody is looking forward to it.

"You know it is going to be really hard and the team did amazing and we managed to win 3-0. It was the perfect day for us."
