Energy bills to hit three-year high as Ofgem announces another rise

  • Energy regulator Ofgem is raising the price cap by 4 per cent from 1 October, increasing the average annual household bill to £1,723.
  • The £60 annual increase marks the highest average energy bill for households in England, Scotland and Wales since July 2023.
  • Higher international wholesale gas prices caused by Middle East conflicts and European heatwaves are driving up costs.
  • Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that the Government has cut VAT on electricity bills from October to help cushion the rise for families.
  • Ofgem has urged consumers to look into fixed-rate tariffs or smart meter options, which could offer savings of £100 or more below the new cap.
