Emotional Allan McGregor addresses Rangers fans at Ibrox ahead of testimonial

Allan McGregor tonight thanked supporters for their backing during his two stints at Rangers.

The goalkeeper, 41, left Rangers upon the expiry of his contract in the summer and will pull on the gloves for the final time at Ibrox in the testimonial against Newcastle tonight.

And ahead of kick-off the goalkeeper conducted a short interview at pitchside as he paid an emotional farewell to the Rangers supporters.

Speaking over the loudspeaker, McGregor said of the supporters: "It's my night to say thank you to them as well.

"The length of time I have been here, the support is unbelievable. It's the best fans in the world."

Then quizzed on why he thought the match would not be a sell-out for his testimonial, McGregor said: "I don't know, I'm very modest, a humble guy so I just thank everyone for coming and let's hope we put on a good show."

Rangers boss Michael Beale also hailed McGregor as a "modern-day icon" at Ibrox.

Paying tribute to the legendary keeper, he said: "He rejoined the club in the summer of 2018 when I first came into the club.

"His experience, his quality, his standards have been the background of all the good things that have happened since then.

"We know that he had a fantastic period with us before but a league winner, another European final and a Scottish Cup in this second part with the club.

"It was great to have him back in the building yesterday and training with the group. Lots of smiles and lots of reminiscing.

"He's just an unbelievable professional; to play the amount of games that he has, and also he has got a highlight reel for the ages.

"I think he is a modern-day icon for the club."
