Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley has teased that his character could depart the soap this year ahead of a host of dramatic storylines lined up this autumn.
The actor , who has played Cain Dingle for more than two decades, spoke about the chances of his character getting the axe ahead of the ITV soap’s 50th anniversary celebrations in October. While details of the anniversary storylines remain tightly under wraps, producers have teased that lives will be left on the line as a killer storm rips through the village.
Jeff spoke to The Express about the possibility of fans having to say farewell to his character, along with co-star Katherine Dow Blyton who plays police officer Harriet Finch. “Well, you never know, do you?” Katherine said when asked about the possibility of characters being killed off during the storm.

“That’s showbiz - one minute you’re here and the next you’re not here,” she added. “But it’s a risk you take and it’s part of the job, isn’t it? Whatever happens, you get to be involved in some fabulous storylines so you have to seize the day.”
Jeff added that the stars of Emmerdale are only given a year-long contract for the soap at a time, and therefore no character is safe from getting the chop. He said: “I sometimes find that hard to believe, but they have got to keep the show moving and they’ve got to freshen up the show.”
Saying that bidding farewell to his fellow stars was ‘always upsetting’, Jeff went on to warn that viewers may be tuning into Cain’s exit storyline sooner than they think. “One day I am sure it will be me - it could be me this year,” he said.
Soap bosses have teased all manner of dramatic storylines in the coming months as the 50th anniversary approaches, from babies and weddings to deaths in the Dales, The Mirror reports . Executive producer Jane Hudson said that viewers can look forward to a whole month of special storylines throughout October.
“In Emmerdale style, we have got every story imaginable,” she teased. “We’ve got things that are going to make you laugh, make you cry, make you surprised, and stories that are going to rock your world.”
The producer further fuelled speculation that characters will lose their lives in the upcoming explosive storylines. “There is always the potential for a murder in Emmerdale,” Jane warned.
