Emmerdale has shared with fans it has "exciting" things in store for its 50th anniversary celebrations.
The ITV show boasts a backlog of almost 9,000 episodes since it first began airing in 1972 and remains as one of the channel's most watched programmes to date. On average, the drama series rakes in an estimated five million viewers a night.
Going into their 50th year, the show has promised fans a lot of exciting things are yet to come. The Emmerdale Instagram account shared the news by revealing their birthday logo - a golden 50 with the village acting as a backdrop.

The caption read: "Our birthday year has begun! Watch out for lots of exciting things happening later in the year, but for now we’re excited to reveal our birthday logo." Fans wished the show a happy birthday and shared their experiences of the programme.
Maggiemog1976 said: "I’ve been watching Emmerdale since I was a little girl as it was Emmerdale Farm then. 50 years is AMAZING."

The comments were also rife with speculation on what the exciting things may be, with some guessing the possibility of returning characters or a new opening theme. Edjohnson7 said: "Will there be a new opening sequence?"
Another commenter, happylover90, said: "I hope Joe Tate comes back". The show has not confirmed any rumours or speculation as to what the news may be.
