Emmerdale's Charity and Mackenzie film 'soap first' as baby bombshell revealed

Emmerdale fans are in for a treat as a 'soap first' featuring Charity Dingle and Mackenzie Boyd airs next week.

After a year of being kept in the dark, Charity, played by Emma Atkins finally discovers her husband, Mack (Lawrence Robb), is the father of Chloe's baby.

Mack rocks up at the hospital when Chloe asks if he wants to see his son following Reuben's meningitis scare, but what he doesn't know is Charity is also there having planned a surprise visit after hearing the tot is on the mend.

After seeing Mack with Reuben the penny drops and Emma, 48, and Lawrence, 31, have now revealed what it was like filming the bombshell storyline.

"There's a moment in the village where we bump into each other and Mackenzie doesn't know that Charity knows and that is magical," Emma told the Mirror and other press.

Lawrence added: "Then there's a scene immediately after that, that we all shot together and that was a learning experience for us all.

The 31-year-old continued: "When it all comes out, hopefully we've done it justice but I don't think it's ever been done in soap before, what we did.

Explaining more about the upcoming scene further, Emma said: "It just breaks a few of the boundaries of normal soap filming."

Admitting the filming was "pretty exhausting", the actress explained a normal scene in the soap is usually five pages long but that this one was 18 pages, so it's a "continuation and unravelling".

While the scene is centred around Charity and Mackenzie, Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) and Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) will also find themselves involved in the action.

Not only does Charity discover Mack's secret, she also realises someone close to her knew about it as well.

The Dingle family will be torn apart as the lie turns their lives upside down, leading to a second devastating discovery that leaves Charity distraught.

When the family find out, it isn't a shock to Charity's teen granddaughter Sarah Sugden - because she's known for some time.

Viewers know that in January, Sarah overheard Chloe and Mack discussing their secret with Mack set to reveal all to his partner.

But Sarah staged a panic attack amid her past health struggles to stop him, before telling them they had to stay apart.

Speaking to The Mirror, Emma shared: "That comes up during a big scene we spoke about. It's one of those moments where she then realises Sarah has covered [for them], and it's pretty devastating."

* Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays
