Emmerdale boss Jane Hudson has confirmed Faye's secret - after fans worked out a link between her, Caleb and Nicky.
Fans have been speculating about Faye's new romance with Mary after the pair became close. Their budding relationship would be Mary's first one with a woman since coming out to her daughter and those around her.
Some viewers were convinced she could have some link with Caleb and Nicky Miligan, after it was recently confirmed they are father and son and there is a as yet unknown mum out there. Others believe Faye could actually be working with the pair.
However, bosses have confirmed she is not related to the Miligans - but it looks like heartbreak is in store for Mary, as her true motives will be exposed in upcoming scenes, no doubt leaving Mary devastated.
Speaking to The Mirror and other press, Jane shared: "We've got the lovely love story playing on screen for Mary and Faye. We are seeing Mary falling in love with Faye. It's Mary's first relationship since coming out and she's been very vulnerable, she's really put herself out there and unfortunately it's not going to be a happy ending.
"Mary is gonna have her heart broken. I think what is really relevant for this story is how easy it is to be scammed, how easy it is to be taken in and how easy it is for love to stop you thinking logically."
She added: "No matter what age you are, we're all vulnerable of being tricked and scammed and catfished, it's a heartbreaking story."
Actress Louise Jameson, who plays Mary, previously explained how important it was for the soap to feature a romantic connection between two members of the same sex, especially for a more mature couple.
"It is a huge jumping off point. It is another story that isn’t told. Whether you’re gay, straight or whatever, what’s your proclivity at 70? I have a springboard. I’ve spent a lot of time going, 'I’ve never even kissed a woman! What am I going to do? I’m going to live the rest of my life alone!' But watch this space… something is going to materialise. Mary is investigating what she could do to find a life partner. She is exploring the possibilities for her," she shared to The Mirror previously.
