Emmerdale anniversary episode ends in disaster as storm and explosion leaves two characters fighting for life

Emmerdale's 50th anniversary has taken place - and characters have seemingly been killed off amid destructive scenes on Sunday evening.

The Virgin Media and ITV soap first aired 50 years ago this weekend, with producers putting gritty episodes on all week.

For the last few weeks, we've seen a teaser of a massive storm hitting the village, the likes of which the residents have never seen before.

And two characters have been left trapped in the woods after a massive fireball.

Harriet Finch was left in an awful way after crashing her quad bike, while searching for missing teenager Amelia Spencer, who had wandered into the woodland.

While Harriet managed to make it out of the crash, the quad then tipped on top of her.

Kim Tate came across the scene and raced to help her love rival, dragging her out of the wreckage.

Harriet begged Kim to stay with her believing she was dying, and not wanting to be on her own as she grew weaker.

But Kim was determined to save Harriet's life - only for her horse to run off and leave her after getting spooked by the lightning.

In that moment, a bolt of lightning struck the quad bike which was leaking oil, causing it to engulf in flames and cause a huge blast.

The explosion sent both Harriet and Kim flying, with Kim hitting her head on a rock as she landed on the floor.

Kim was lifeless and unable to help Harriet, who was also motionless on the ground as the episode came to a dramatic end.

It comes as bosses recently confirmed more than one village resident will die during the big week

Producer Jane Hudson spilled: "We will be having some huge stunts, big emotional heartache, secrets, lies, comedy and sadly, some of the soap’s much-loved characters will sadly lose their lives.

"It is always hard to kill a character as someone is losing their job. You don’t want somebody to lose their job.

"But the nature of soaps means if you want to introduce new characters, then you need to lose old ones. If you are going to do a death in the soap, it can’t be the postman who has had three lines because it doesn’t matter.

"A death has got to have an impact not just on the characters but also on the viewers watching. Each of our deaths will bring a different emotion."
