Emmanuel the TikTok emu fighting for his life as avian flu kills over 50 birds at farm

Emmanuel the emu is fighting for his life after an outbreak of avian flu wiped out 99% of birds on his owner's farm.

The TikTok star, who shot to fame three months ago for cheekily interrupting his caretaker's videos, came down with the disease at Knuckle Bump Farms in South Florida last Wednesday.

His owner, Taylor Blake, has been treating him "around the clock" ever since by hand-feeding him all his food and administering him subcutaneous fluids every two hours.

She tweeted: "I will do anything and go into any amount of debt to save his life."

The 29-year-old has lost more than 50 birds in just three days to the deadly virus, which is thought to have been transmitted by wild geese flying into the farm every night.

Officials also apparently told her that the standing water left over from Hurricane Ian made the virus "run rampant".

Taylor posted on Twitter: "I lost Emily, Eliza and Elliot. The virus hit them extremely hard and very quickly. I tried my best to save them, but I was unsuccessful.

"We lost every single chicken and duck on our farm. We lost all of our geese. We lost our 2 female black swans. We lost both of our turkeys."

Although Emmanuel has a long road ahead, she believes he will make a full recovery and continue to spread "love, light and joy".

Tweeting a photo of herself with the beloved emu, the farmer said: "It seems like I haven’t been able to catch a break these past few months, but I am so incredibly blessed.

"I have so much gratitude in my heart that Emmanuel is still alive. That he is fighting. That my best friend is making a comeback.

"I am going to be ok, we are going to be ok!"

She added that "every precaution recommended by the FDA is being taken", writing: "We are constantly sanitizing and washing our hands, clothes and bodies.

"Emmanuel freaks out whenever we approach him wearing a mask. He does not understand, and it is extremely stressful on him.

"I am not going to put more stress on him."

In a recent update on the farm bird's progress, she shared a video of him drinking water by himself for the first time since becoming ill.

Emmanuel quickly become a viral sensation after ruining his caretaker's videos by pecking at her screen.

Viewers find his disruptive behaviour hilarious, and videos of him taking over the camera frame while his caretaker shouts "No, Emmanuel, stop" have racked up millions of views.

Taylor tries to make educational videos about the animals on the farm, but her attempts are often thwarted by Emmanuel as he knocks over the camera.

As well as her more recent TikToks, Taylor has been creating content on other platforms since 2013.

She also works with lots of other animals including deer, pigs and cows.
