Emma Willis breaks down as she recalls the height of Matt Willis' addiction

Emma Willis broke down in tears as she recalled the height of husband Matt Willis ' alcohol and drug addiction.

The Voice host Emma and Busted star Matt have been married for nearly 15 years and both appeared in a special BBC One documentary on Wednesday night which focused on the latter's battle with addiction.

In the documentary Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction, he opened up about his past problems and looked for answers as to why he became an addict for both booze and drugs.

In the build-up to their big day in Northamptonshire in 2008, Emma kept a diary which logged how much her then-fiancé had drank or taken each day.

During the emotional scene during Wednesday's documentary, the former Big Brother presenter looked through the diary for the first time after locking it away following his sobriety.

In one of the entries, Emma wrote that Matt was "totally p*****" before explained her reasons for keeping the log to the cameras.

The 47-year-old said: "The only thing I could think of to keep track, was to keep a diary.

"I don't think I've ever read it since I wrote it. It's literally just notes of... what I knew he had consumed.

"A bottle of champagne, a couple of wines, a couple of wines... another bottle of champagne, and more."

She added: "And more, is a reference to... um, drugs."

Matt's addiction started during the height of Busted's popularity in 2002 before meeting Emma two years later. The couple became an item in 2005 before getting married at Rushton Hall in July 2008.

He voluntarily checked himself into rehab before his wedding and was sober for eight years as a result.

In the meantime, Matt became a father of three to daughters Isabelle and Trixie and son Ace. However, he relapsed in 2016 while on tour with the reformed Busted, who originally split up in 2005.

Emma recalls: "I thought he would die. He had relapsed massively when I thought it was all good."

Matt had been tempted by cocaine rather than booze thinking that would be OK because he was an alcoholic. He was wrong and barely saw his family for four months. "I was doing six grams a day," he remembers.

He shared his surprise that Emma continued to stay by his side despite the problems he had.

Ahead of the documentary, Matt said: "I was always surprised [Emma] didn't leave me, she's an unbelievable woman.

"I caused her so much agony, but she saw something in me I didn't see in myself, and I'm forever grateful to her and indebted to her."
