Emma Watson made a rare public appearance on September 19 at the opening night gala for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, and the dress she wore was not made in a traditional atelier. The actress arrived in a bespoke black velvet mini dress covered in real, living flowers, created in collaboration with her stylist, Jared Ellner, and Los Angeles florist Anthony Maslo of The Boy Who Cried Flowers.
The dress itself was built from recycled black velvet sourced in downtown Los Angeles, cut into an off-the-shoulder silhouette with a short hem. The black base stayed deliberately understated, leaving room for a dense arrangement of three-dimensional florals along the neckline and hem. Maslo and his team hand-placed each bloom directly onto the fabric on the day of the event, using four varieties of Phalaenopsis orchids, two varieties of Dendrobium orchids, and two types of lilies, Nerine and Gloriosa, along with baby's breath for volume. White blossoms dominated the arrangement, with smaller touches of yellow and pale pink woven through. The floral treatment extended to her footwear, with matching blooms decorating the toes of her black pumps.
