Emma Corrin opens up about difficulties of 'discovering' gender identity as actor in film industry

Emma Corrin has opened up about the difficulties of "discovering" their gender identity while also trying to break through in the film industry.

They are best known for their role as Princess Diana in the fourth season of the Netflix historical drama The Crown. The actor, 26, identifies as non-binary - an umbrella terms for people whose gender identity doesn't sit comfortably with man or woman.

Emma came out as queer in July 2021 and added she/they pronouns to their Instagram account, where they have over 819,000 followers, before changing to they/them shortly afterwards.

In the lead up to International Non-Binary People's Day in July 2022, they became the first non-binary person to be on the cover of Vogue.

In an interview with the New York Times, the My Policeman star spoke about the challenges of trying to learn about themselves while in the pressure cooker that is the film industry.

They said: "It’s hard to be discovering something in yourself at the same time you’re navigating an industry that demands a lot of you, in terms of knowing who you are."

The actor had previously explained how they felt "so weird and uncomfortable" when people referred to them as 'she' while working and the decision to identify as non-binary has led to Emma feeling "more comfortable".

They added: "My identity and being non-binary is an embrace of many different parts of myself, the masculine and the feminine and everything in between."

The 26-year-old is best known for playing Princess Diana in Netflix hit series The Crown (Netflix)

Their latest role sees them play the eponymous lead role of Netflix romantic drama film Lady Chatterley's Lover alongside Jack O'Connell, which was released on the streaming platform on Friday (December 2).

Last week, Emma took to Instagram to share a rare-yet-lengthy statement regarding their quotes and the subject of gender or sexuality in the media.

The post garnered over 117,000 likes, with the likes of singer Paloma Faith, Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa and Lady Chatterley's Lover co-star Ella Hunt applauding them for speaking out.

They wrote: "I rarely go public to say anything like this as I understand the nature of journalism in this industry.

"However, if you are interviewing me about my work and the subject of gender comes up, please respect and represent the integrity of my answer in the context of the interview as a whole.

"What I mean is, do not sensationalise an answer for the sake of a click bait headline when it is really a subject that, to be a headline, requires proper enquiry and should be represented with more nuance."

Emma continued: "I stand by any comment that I make surrounding the issue of gender and I've always been incredibly open about this subject.

"However we are treading very delicate waters when it comes to representation of gender in the media and when you reduce entire conversations to click bait it is not only offensive but you are in danger of scaring people out of talking altogether and what our community needs now more than ever is the knowledge that our openness and honesty will not be taken advantage, of.

"When we talk about sexuality or gender we have to trust the sensitivity of those conversations will be honoured in equal measure to the sensitivity in which those conversations will be represented. Thank you, Emma x."
