Emile Smith Rowe gives Mikel Arteta honest Bukayo Saka verdict amid Arsenal contract decision

Emile Smith Rowe has lauded Bukayo Saka for his "ridiculous maturity" following a testing campaign on both the international and domestic stage. The Hale End graduates featured 31 times alongside one another last term, combining to score two goals.

They've established themselves as some of Europe's most exciting young players, steering Mikel Arteta's side back into contention for Champions League qualification. And, while Saka has quickly become a mainstay under Gareth Southgate, Smith Rowe is yet to earn his stripes for England.

As both friends and colleagues, the duo have enjoyed success together, winning the Community Shield and landing Europa League qualification. But they've also endured the troughs - namely, Euro 2020 last summer.

Smith Rowe has sung Saka's praises after the 20-year-old received torrid backlash after the European Championships. He praised the England star for his "ridiculous maturity" after navigating his way back to the highest level.

"I’ve grown up with him, I’ve known him for a long time," Smith Rowe told The Daily Mail. "So for him to come through it, it’s no surprise to see how strong he is. At such a young age, his maturity is ridiculous. I’m happy for him and long may it continue."

Saka sees his contract at the Emirates Stadium expire in 2024, which has naturally cast an element of doubt over his future in north London. The winger has been thinly linked with an exit from Arsenal with Liverpool said to be interested, and Arteta has offered an update on the situation.

The north Londoners are said to be desperate to tie Saka down to a new deal, with the Spaniard insisting that both the club and the player are close to getting a deal wrapped up. After a 2-0 friendly win over Everton in Baltimore, Arteta said: "We will try and we both have the same intention and it’s a matter of time."
