Emerson Royal blasted for 'ridiculous' moment as Spurs fail to beat Sporting amid VAR dispute

Emerson Royal was blasted by Jermaine Jenas on BT Sport's commentary for Tottenham vs Sporting CP after a 'ridiculous' attempt at a no-look pass in the latter stages of the game. The Lilywhites went on to draw the game 1-1 despite late VAR controversy that resulted in Harry Kane's supposed winner - that came from a Royal cross - being ruled out for offside.

With around 80 minutes played, Spurs were knocking on the door for a winner and were piling huge amounts of pressure on Ruben Amorim's men. As the pressure was building, the Brazilian found himself with plenty of space on the right-hand side. The Spurs defender had more than enough time to either pick a pass or deliver a cross into the box, but instead, he failed in a dreadful attempt to play a no-look pass to Bryan Gil. The Ball subsequently went out for a goal-kick.

Jenas, formerly a Spurs player, was left bewildered by such a silly decision: "It's ridiculous," he said live on BT Sport. "If you're going to do it, at least have the quality to do it. You're just letting the team off the hook."

Royal's unfortunate moment summed up a dismal night for Spurs that was made worse by the late VAR controversy. Kane thought he had secured Tottenham's place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 95th-minute winner, but he was adjudged to be in an offside position after a lengthy check.

Spurs' players and coaching staff were left baffled by the decision because Kane appeared to be level with Royal, and the Brazilian's cross was actually played against a Sporting defender before deflecting its way through to England's captain. To make matters worse, Antonio Conte was then sent off following his respective protests, and he's since been suspended for one UEFA game, meaning he will miss Tottenham's all-important clash against Marseille next week.
