Emergency services scramble to crash on Regent Road after vehicle ploughs into traffic lights

Emergency services scrambled to a smash on Regent Road on Tuesday evening. The incident involved two cars which appeared to have collided at the junction with Oldfield Road.

Pictures showed the extent of the damage, with a large police presence at the scene. One car, a white Toyota Aygo, was pictured crushed into a set of traffic lights at the usually-busy junction.

Following the incident, which happened on the westbound carriageway heading out of the city centre, towards the M602, traffic built up as far back as the Mancunian Way (A57) as the road was blocked off. An onlooker spoke of how the road was 'chaos' with cars having to squeeze past the incident in single file once the left-hand lane had reopened back up.

It is thought the incident happened shortly after 9pm, with MancTraffic tweeting: "Crash and queues on the A57 Regent Rd, Salford at Oldfield Rd. Congestion already onto Mancunian Way if you're heading out of town."

Transport for Greater Manchester also shared information about the incident, and warned nearby drivers to be cautious as one lane remained closed whilst police waited for recovery vehicles to arrive. The M.E.N understands that the drivers of the vehicles escaped without any injuries.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police remained at the scene and helped guide traffic following the smash, which resulted in a traffic light almost completely toppling over. A witness said: "There is complete stand still traffic right back as far as Mancunian Way. It is chaos. They are going to have to close the entire junction when they recover the vehicles away from the scene."
