Three fire engines were in attendance in North Shields after reports of a blaze at a commercial building.
Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service attended the scene as they tackled the inferno at a commercial building on Northumberland Square in North Shields. A cordon was put in place at the scene.
Police say they subsequently closed Northumberland Square while emergency crews were present. The extend of the damage has not yet been revealed.

Pictures from the scene show brigade personnel going in and out of the property, as well as the cordons in place.
A representative from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue said earlier this evening: "We first got the call at 18.02pm to the incident on Northumberland Square in North Shields.
"We have three appliances in attendance at fire in a commercial building."
Officers from Northumbria Police confirmed their crews attended the scene to assist fire crews after their assistance was requested.
A spokesperson said: "We got request from fire to assist regards to a building fire on Upper Camden Street, North Shields.
"We have since closed Upper Camden Street. We were called at about 6.30pm."
Fire crews remain at the scene on Northumberland Square at the time of writing.
