Embattled New Zealand prime minister survives leadership vote

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced he successfully survived a confidence vote among his National Party lawmakers.
Luxon said he called for the vote himself to address intense media speculation surrounding his leadership following recent drops in opinion polls.
The vote took place during a routine, but unusually long, meeting of the centre-right National Party caucus in Wellington.
This leadership challenge occurred just over six months before New Zealand's next national election, scheduled for 7 November.
Luxon, a former airline executive, has led the National Party since 2021 and has governed New Zealand in a right-wing coalition since the 2023 election.
