Elon Musk's super PAC spent more than $800,000 in August supporting Republican candidates in competitive congressional races, the first disclosed spending from a midterm effort that could ultimately exceed $100 million despite Musk's previous statements that he intended to reduce his political involvement.
Federal Election Commission filings released Wednesday show America PAC directed most of the money toward Senate contests, including nearly $248,000 in Texas, $170,000 in Maine and $106,000 in Ohio. The group also spent in New Hampshire, Iowa, Michigan and Alaska, as well as competitive House districts in several states.
The expenditures were categorized as printing costs, suggesting they funded political mailers. Separately, America PAC has spent more than $207,000 on digital advertising in Texas, Michigan, New Hampshire and Maine, according to AdImpact and Facebook advertising records.
The spending follows The New York Times' July report that Musk authorized America PAC to spend between $100 million and $120 million on a field operation aimed at helping Republicans in at least eight states. The effort is expected to target competitive Senate and House races and include firms focused on turning out voters.
The investment marks a return to Republican politics for Musk after his public falling-out with President Donald Trump last year and threats to create a third party. Musk spent close to $300 million during the 2024 election cycle and was the largest individual political donor of either party, according to federal filings.
His renewed spending also contrasts with his recent public comments about stepping away from politics. "I think I got a little too involved in politics," Musk told The Economist in an interview published July 23. "I got carried away, frankly."
Musk is not currently expected to take as public a role in the midterms as he did during the 2024 presidential campaign. But America PAC's August expenditures indicate that the financial operation behind his political involvement is already underway.
