Elon Musk vs Mark Zuckerberg fight: Training, odds and is it really happening?

In an unlikely turn of events, it appears that tech giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have agreed to an MMA fight.

The first rumblings of a fight between them were stirred up when Twitter owner Musk responded to a post about Facebook and Meta chief executive Zuckerberg possibly launching a new social media platform to rival Twitter. "I'm up for a cage match if he is,” Musk wrote.

Zuckerberg, who has recently been competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions, responded on Instagram by telling Musk to “send location”. Here is everything you need to know about the bizarre potential matchup:

Will Musk vs Zuckerberg it happen?

Following a response from Zuckerberg, a location was floated by Tesla boss Musk, who suggested that the fight could take place in an octagon in Las Vegas. This brought an excited response from UFC president Dana White, who told TMZ that both men were “dead serious” about making the fight.

White helped orchestrate the crossover boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, back in 2017, and insisted that it would not be a ‘gimmick’. "This is a fight between two of the most powerful/richest guys in the world,” he wrote on Instagram, after posing in a promotional t-shirt. “Who will win? Who has seen this before? NOBODY. It's also a crossover fight that literally EVERYONE will watch."

Several fighters have already offered to help train both men, with Musk accepting help from former two-weight UFC champion Georges St-Pierre. It has been claimed that the money raised would go to charity, with Betfair offering odds of 100/1 that the stakes could also include the loser being forced to hand over either Facebook or Twitter to their tech rival.

Despite the UFC offering to host the fight, the matchup could potentially be broadcast live across social media, with Betfair making it odds-on (4/6) to be shown on either Facebook or Twitter. Betfair also gives odds of 50/1 for the fight to take place in space and 5/4 to be hosted in the Metaverse.

Research from Japan-101 has found that both Musk and Zuckerberg have larger social media followings than any combat sport star, with a combined audience of 278million, leading to estimates that the fight could break pay-per-view records and gross more than $1bn.

Who would win?

Zuckerberg began training both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA in 2022. The Facebook CEO competed in his first BJJ competition in May, picking up a gold and silver medal. Meanwhile, Musk has admitted, “I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids & throwing them in the air.”
