Elon Musk's bankruptcy warning has resurfaced after US federal debt climbed above $40 trillion (£30.28 trillion). The Tesla chief said America was '1,000% going to go bankrupt' without artificial intelligence and robots. Musk made the remarks on 5 February during the Dwarkesh Podcast, months before the debt passed that threshold.
Musk was making a prediction about America's long-term fiscal path, not announcing an actual bankruptcy. US Treasury data put total public debt at about $40.17 trillion (£30.41 trillion) on 30 September, the end of fiscal year 2026.
