Ellie Bamber will portray Kate Moss in new film project Moss & Freud, which is set to document the supermodel’s relationship with artist Lucian Freud.
Set in Holland Park and surrounding London in the early 2000s, the film will focus on the time Moss sat for Freud, exploring the painter’s past and the model’s life at the height of her career.
The grandson of Sigmund Freud took nine months to complete his portrait of Moss, in which the two developed a close relationship, despite their obvious differences.
Moss even went on to get a tattoo inked on her body in tribute to the painter. Speaking about the experience on BBC Radio 4 program Desert Island Discs, she explained the inking was drawn by Freud himself and placed on her thigh.
Speaking about the bird tattoo that now appears to resemble “varicose veins”, she said: “I’m still probably the only living person with a Lucian Freud on my thigh”.
Moss also discussed her experience of being painted by Freud, after revealing it was one of her ambitions. She now considers it to be one of the highlights of her life so far.
However, she wasn’t as keen on the finished product. Speaking at a press conference announcing the film last year, she said: “He didn’t really like the picture, and I didn’t really. I mean, I had a great time. [But] it’s not, like, my favourite Lucian painting.”
She also recently spoke about her involvement in the film project and working alongside director James Lucas.
Moss said: “As this is such a personal story of mine it has been essential that I be involved with James in all aspects as the project has developed. I am thrilled by the recent casting and excited that the film will begin shooting soon, I cannot wait to see it.”
She will be an executive producer of the film, and also helped cast Ellie, who starred in Serpent and Nocturnal Animals, to play her in the biopic.
Freud will be played by Derek Jacobi, who also starred in Murder on the Orient Express.
