Olympic chiefs bar trans women from female category at LA2028

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has ruled that transgender women are no longer eligible for the women’s category in Olympic events.
  • This new policy is set to begin with the LA 2028 Games.
  • Eligibility will be determined by a one-time gene-screening test, with athletes possessing the SRY gene deemed ineligible for the women's category.
  • The IOC said that the presence of the SRY gene is considered highly accurate evidence of male sex development.
  • IOC president Kirsty Coventry said that the decision aims to ensure fairness and protect athlete safety, particularly in contact sports.
