Cyclone Michaung | 31 flights diverted from Chennai to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru

Due to heavy rains in Chennai, triggered by cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’, around 31 flights were diverted to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Monday, December 4.

The Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) officials said that 14 domestic flights and 17 international flights, which were scheduled to land in Chennai, were diverted to the KIA.

BIAL said the diverted flights include two flights which took off from KIA but had to return to Bengaluru due to adverse weather conditions in Chennai.

“Flights belonging to Indigo, SpiceJet, Etihad, Gulf Air, Fly Dubai, Air India, Lufthansa and British Airways have been diverted from Chennai to Bengaluru. Thirty-one diverted flights have landed at KIA, including two which took off from Bengaluru but had to return,” said BIAL officials.

Officials said that they do not expect any diversions as the Chennai airport has been closed till 11.30 pm.

Passenger advisory

BIAL also issued a passenger advisory stating that due to adverse weather conditions in the region and temporary closure for arrival operations at Chennai airport, scheduled departures from KIA to Chennai, Tirupati and Vijayawada are experiencing delays or cancellations.

“Passengers are requested to check with their respective airlines for alerts and updates,” BIAL stated in the advisory.

On Monday, 10 arrivals from Chennai were cancelled while one flight landed at KIA. All 10 scheduled departures from KIA to Chennai were also cancelled — of these, eight were Indigo flights and two belonged to AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India).
