Electric Ireland has been accused of shafting ordinary domestic customers in favour of business customers after they announced tariff reductions for commercial accounts only.
Labour finance spokesman and TD for Louth, Ged Nash, said that the news would “stick in the craw” for ordinary households struggling to pay their bills.
The energy firm will be reducing electricity prices by 10% for small and medium enterprises and gas prices by 15%.

Mr Nash said that Electric Ireland buys energy for the same price so he wants an explanation why there are two different pricing structures.
He told the Irish Mirror: “We know that Electric Ireland has given a €50 credit to customers and this is welcome but this decision will really stick in the craw of hard-pressed domestic bill payers.
“Nearly a third of all householders are experiencing energy poverty.
“People are really struggling to keep the lights and the heat on.
“Energy companies pay the same wholesale rate for gas to generate electricity regardless of whether the electricity goes to a business or a home.
“Why then have they chosen to cut bills for businesses and not ordinary bill payers across Ireland?
“This demands a credible explanation and action.”
