An elderly Canadian woman in her 70s was approved for assisted dying after saying she wanted to end her life because she could no longer cook for her family, two University of Toronto psychiatrists have revealed.

In an opinion piece for the New York Times on 5 October, professors Gary Rodin and Madeline Li said the woman had long taken pride in her role as the family matriarch. She told doctors she felt she had lost her value to her relatives, but counselling later prompted her to reconsider ending her life.
