Elderly woman dies in crash at Lake Macquarie intersection

An elderly woman has died in hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Lake Macquarie.

About 12.05pm on Wednesday, August 26, emergency services were called to a crash at Swansea.

A Subaru SUV and a Toyota utility had collided at the intersection of Rawson and Pelican streets.

The front passenger of the Subaru, a 92-year-old woman, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, police said in a statement.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition but later died, police said.

The driver of the Subaru, a 67-year-old woman, was also taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment.

A 36-year-old man driving the Toyota was not injured. He was taken to Belmont Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Also on Wednesday, a truck and a car crashed in the Hunter Valley about 7.15pm.

Reports indicated a truck and car had collided on the arterial Maitland Road at the Dalton Avenue intersection.

Paramedics saw a driver at the scene, believed to be a woman in her 60s and the only occupant of the car, though police said there was no indication of serious injury.

Officers and emergency services remained on the scene late on Wednesday night.

The crash resulted in extensive delays in the area.
