Elderly pedestrian hit by car on Beaumont Street: driver charged

AN ELDERLY pedestrian has been hit by a car on Beaumont Street, suffering serious head injuries.

About 11.35am Thursday September 26, emergency services were called to Hamilton following reports of a crash.

According to witnesses, a car allegedly collided with a pedestrian at the intersection of Beaumont and Hudson streets near the Hamilton train station.

The 73-year-old male pedestrian was treated by paramedics at the scene for serious head injuries, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the car, a man aged 66, was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

The driver was then arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where he was charged.

He spent the night in custody after being refused bail, and will face court today on charges of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm (GBH), and negligent driving causing GBH.

His licence was suspended.

Newcastle City police established a crime scene which was examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.

Beaumont Street had reopened by about 3pm, police confirmed.
