An elderly man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after an alleged assault in a fast food restaurant car park in Newcastle on the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the Hungry Jack's car park on Lambton Road at Broadmeadow just before 11.30am on Sunday, July 19.
Newcastle police officers attended and found an 83-year-old man suffering serious head injuries.
Police were told that the man had been involved in an altercation with another man who had left the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man before taking him to hospital for further treatment. He was reportedly in a serious but stable condition at that time.
Police set up a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.
Following inquiries, a 34-year-old man attended Waratah Police Station just before 2pm that day, where he was arrested.

The man, Shamayl Ahsan Sheikh, was charged with reckless wounding and breaching bail.
Sheikh spent the night in custody before facing bail court on Monday, where his release was refused. He will face Newcastle court later this week.
Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident were continuing.
