AN ELDERLY man is fighting for life in hospital four days after he was allegedly attacked by a 24-year-old woman.

Emergency services were called to Raglan Street at Wallsend just before 1am on Sunday, November 10, after reports of an assault.

Police at the scene were told a woman had struck an elderly man with an object, which caused him to fall onto the road.

Ambulance paramedics treated an 81-year-old man at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Police confirmed on Thursday he remained there in a critical condition.

The woman allegedly left the scene before police arrived and Strike Forct Pinnaroo was launched to investigate.

Newcastle police detectives raided a unit on Raglan Street at Wallsend at about 3pm on Monday, November 11, where they allegedly seized clothing and a "ream of paper" believed to have been used in the assault.

A 24-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with causing reckless grievous bodily harm.

She was refused bail to front Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, November 13, where she was formally refused bail to face court again later this month.
