(Picture: PA Archive)An elderly English couple have been found dead in a swimming pool at their holiday villa in France.
The pair, believed to be in their 80s, had invited friends to their home in Gignac, Hérault, southern France on Saturday evening.
But when the friends knocked on the door and heard no response, they let themselves in through an unlocked door.
They found the shocking scene of the pensioners dead in their swimming pool outside at around 8pm, the Metropolitain reports.
It is unclear how the deaths occured, but initial investigations indicate it was accidental.
An autopsy of the bodies was also ordered by the Montpellier prosecutor’s office to determine the causes and time of the two deaths.
“It is not excluded that one of the spouses who witnessed the drowning of the other came to his aid and that he sank in turn”, a source close to the investigation told the Metropolitain.
It is being reported that no early indications show violence at the property.
It comes four months after a murder investigation was opened after the bodies of a British couple were found in at their isolated countryside home in southwest France.
Friends of the pair visited after not hearing from them for at least three days in Boudrac, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, south of Toulouse.
When they arrived at their home – which was due to be turned into a bed and breakfast guest house – on Sunday afternoon they found the lifeless body of a 65-year-old woman.
