An unfortunate incident occurred in Kafue National Park, Zambia, where an elderly American woman lost her life after an elephant charged at a vehicle carrying tourists. The incident, which took place during a game drive organized by the conservation and hospitality company Wilderness, also left another woman injured and four other individuals with minor injuries.
According to Wilderness CEO Keith Vincent, the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide was unexpectedly charged by a bull elephant, leading to the tragic event. Despite the guide's experience, the terrain and vegetation obstructed the route, preventing a quick escape from the elephant's path.
The deceased woman, identified as 79-year-old Gail Mattson, was a grandmother and retired mortgage professional. Her family, who received the news from the US embassy, expressed their deep sorrow over the loss. Mattson's son, Blake Vetter, highlighted her adventurous spirit, mentioning her desire to spend a month in Africa despite her age.
While the family acknowledges the risks associated with wildlife encounters, they emphasized that the incident was a freak accident and urged against blaming the elephant or the guide. Wilderness has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and is providing support to the affected guests and guide.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene for assistance. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of safety measures during such excursions.
