A year ago, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition looked like exactly the kind of disastrous Switch 2 port players feared. At Gamescom 2025, journalists testing the demo reported frame rates plummeting well below 30fps in open areas, with some estimates putting handheld performance as low as 15fps, with press also prohibited from recording the handheld demo, leaving outlets to describe the performance rather than show it directly (Tech Times). In October 2025, FromSoftware pulled the game out of its planned 2025 window, saying it needed to "move the launch to 2026 to allow time for performance adjustments" (Notebookcheck).
Now, with reviews landing ahead of the game's August 28, 2026 launch, the difference is striking. Nintendo Life's review reports the game holding its 30fps target well in both docked and handheld modes, "with only occasional minor drops when out in the overworld or dealing with massive bosses" — and running at a crisp 1080p or close to it (Nintendo Life). That's not "does Elden Ring run on Switch 2" anymore. The more interesting question is how one of the platform's most worrying ports turned into a genuinely convincing one.
