Experts have warned that this year’s El Niño event could be the “strongest in living memory” – increasing the likelihood of 2027 becoming the hottest year on record.
Sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean have already surpassed the highest recorded during any previous El Niño events, and the weather phenomenon isn’t expected to peak until late autumn or early winter.
