Eilish McColgan withdraws from World Athletics Championship

Eilish McColgan has withdrawn from the World Athletics Championships, which begin in Budapest tomorrow.

The 32-year-old has had an injury-plagued 2023 and has only raced twice this year, the most recent over four months ago.

A knee injury forced her out of making her marathon debut in London in April and the Commonwealth Games gold medallist has failed to shake off that injury in time for these World Championships, where she was due to run the 10,000m.

“Sadly, I've made the hard decision to miss this year's World Championships,” the Dundee runner said.

“We always knew it was going to be tight to make it to the start line, having carried a knee injury since April but I was moving in the right direction and banked a solid three weeks of training in St Moritz with the GB team.

“We tried everything we could to be race ready for this weekend, but unfortunately I ran out of time to get back into spikes.”

McColgan will now turn her attention to potentially making her marathon debut later this year before focusing on Paris 2024, which would be her fourth Olympic Games.

“With the Olympics just around the corner, the stakes are too high (to compete in Budapest),” she added.

“I'm hopeful that I'll be able to showcase my fitness on the roads this autumn, before taking a break to prepare for 2024.”
