Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number mattress: Price & trial
- Both are premium brands but with frequent sales
- A queen Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra has an MSRP of $4,699
- Sleep Number m7 smart queen MSRP is $3,999 (mattress only)
Before we dive into the details, it's worth noting that both Eight Sleep and Sleep Number are innovators in the smart beds and mattresses market. And for that innovation, you can expect a premium price tag.
The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra has an MSRP of $4,699 for a queen, although you'll rarely have to pay full price. However, Eight Sleep doesn't offer the big savings we see from other sleep brands — expect between $50 to $250 off.
Sleep Number runs semi-regular sales, but the deals vary. The discounts tend to switch between a set amount off (such as $600), or a percentage discount (such as 20%). Currently, you can save $600 on the Sleep Number M7 smart bed, reducing a queen size to $3,399 (was $3,999).
Keep in mind that with the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra, you'll need an Autopilot subscription to access its smart features, including snoring mitigation, temperature control, and sleep tracking. Plans start at $17 per month and are billed annually. A paid subscription is not required to access the Sleep Number M7's smart features.
Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number mattress: Materials & design
- Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra is a smart mattress cover and adjustable base
- Sleep Number m7 is a memory foam mattress with adjustable firmness
- Add a FlexFit Smart Base to a Sleep Number bed for snore control
The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra isn't a mattress — it's a mattress cover and base. The smart cover features integrated cooling technology so you can adjust the temperature (but we'll cover this in more detail below). The low profile base allows you to change the angle at the head and feet of the mattress, with integrated sleep trackers enabling these adjustments even as you sleep.
All Sleep Number mattresses come with two key features: adjustable firmness and integrated sleep trackers. The m7 smart bed is slightly different to other mattresses in the Sleep Number line up, as it uses memory foam to create a contoured feel (and you still get the adjustable firmness).
But if stopping snoring is your focus when choosing a Sleep Number bed, opt to add a FlexFit base. The FlexFit 1 Smart Base includes Partner Snore technology. Simply touch a button and the head of the mattress will raise, quietening your partner's snoring.
Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number mattress: Support & comfort
- Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra base elevates the head and feet to reduce pressure
- The Pod 4 Ultra cover shouldn't change the overall feel of your mattress
- Sleep Number m7 allows you to pick the feel you want
The overall feel of the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra will largely depend on the mattress underneath, as the smart cover is designed to be as thin and dynamic as possible. So if you've got the best hybrid mattress already, you should still be able to feel it. The smart base, however, will make an overall difference to the feel.
For a start, you can raise your head and feet to limit pressure on the spine. But if you snore, or share with a snorer, this head elevation comes with an extra benefit. Raising the head opens the airways, for easier breathing and less snoring. Plus, integrated sleep trackers can detect snoring and respond by gently lifting the head even as you sleep.
The Sleep Number m7 is a foam bed, but not like the options you'll find in our best memory foam mattress guide. The foams do give the bed some contoured cushioning, but this is a smart mattress — you can adjust the firmness to suit your need.
But if you're looking for an effective anti-snoring device, add an adjustable base to your Sleep Number mattress. The FlexFit 1 smart base is the cheapest in the lineup and features Partner Snore technology. With just the touch of a button, you can raise the head and reduce snoring.
Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number mattress: Temperature control
- Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra smart cover has integrated cooling technology
- Responsive Eight Sleep cooling adjusts temperature throughout the night
- Sleep Number m7 has ceramic infused layers to draw heat away
For cooler sleep, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra is the winner. The smart cover includes integrated and responsive cooling technology. Before going to bed, pick your perfect temperature then throughout the night the cover will adjust to maintain this ideal climate.
Sleep Number has infused the m7 smart bed with a ceramic material to draw heat away from the body. This cooling build can't compare to the level of control the Eight Sleep provides, but for most, it should result in a comfortable sleep environment. That said, if you do want more control over your sleep climate, add a Sleep Number DualTemp Layer separately.
Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number mattress: Which should you buy?
Buy the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra if...
✅ You sleep hot: The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra excels at temperature regulation, allowing you to take control over the feel of your bed. You can even warm it up, if you don't want to climb onto an icy cold mattress.
✅ You're happy with your current mattress: While the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra comes with a mattress cover and base, the mattress itself is not included. So if you're happy with your current bed (just not your partner's snoring), this simply acts as an addition.
✅ You want automatic snoring cut off: Throughout the night the Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra listens out for snoring and responds by gently raising the head of the mattress, opening the airways for quieter breathing.
Buy the Sleep Number m7 smart bed if...
✅ You need a whole new bed: If you buy a Sleep Number mattress, you get a brand new mattress (unlike the Eight Sleep cover). If you're tired of your current bed, this is your chance to upgrade while dealing with that snoring problem.
✅ You toss and turn: Adjustable and responsive firmness allows Sleep Number beds to change the feel over night. If you move from your back to your side, the Sleep Number should keep you comfortably supported.
✅ You're heading towards sleep divorce: If you and your partner can't decide what bed feels best, and snoring is driving you to different bedrooms, the Sleep Number m7 offers a two-in-one solution.
