Research to assess the safety of teenagers using smartphones and social media is urgently needed, according to a Conservative MP. Miriam Cates (Penistone and Stocksbridge) said there is a need to assess the impact of the devices and apps, such as Instagram and TikTok, on the mental health of children.
She added some have said smartphones are "as addictive as cigarettes" before highlighting a campaign which has called for "prominent tobacco-style health warnings" about screen time and the "potentially addictive nature" of devices to be displayed on smartphone packaging. The "Safe Screens for Teens" campaign also wants smartphone use to be prohibited in schools and early-years settings, with the online safety curriculum including education on addictive smartphone behaviour.
Ms Cates's remarks came during a Labour-led debate on mental health treatment and support. Labour wants the Government to adopt its plan, which includes recruiting thousands of mental health staff to expand access to treatment.
