Edinson Cavani offers to join Radamel Falcao as ex-Man Utd strikers eye transfer reunion

Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani could link up with Radamel Falcao next season after the Uruguayan’s contract at Old Trafford expired.

A number of clubs in Europe have enquired about taking the 35-year-old while Argentine giants Boca Juniors have also been in the running to land his signature. He is now a free agent and on the lookout for a new club – with La Liga thought to be his favoured destination.

The experienced striker is hopeful of playing regularly for a club in Europe’s top five leagues as he wants to still be operating at the top level ahead of this winter’s World Cup finals in Qatar. The veteran striker still plays an important role for Uruguay and this year is likely to be his last World Cup appearance.

Cavani was involved in just 15 Premier League last season having impressed in his debut campaign and whilst that has partly been down to multiple injuries, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo pushed him down the pecking order at Old Trafford. He was one of six players to leave United at the end of their contracts alongside Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant.

The Uruguayan had enjoyed an impressive debut season at United in which he played an important cameo role in which he scored 17 goals across all competitions, earning him a one-year contract extension. However, he was only able to find the net twice in his second and final campaign with the club.

A report in Marca has outlined how Cavani has offered his services to Madrid-based club Rayo Vallecano, who will be competing in La Liga next season. That would see him link-up with another former United striker – the Colombian forward Falcao, who bagged six goals for Rayo last season having joined the club from Galatasaray.

While Cavani would be keen to play for Rayo, his reported wage demands of £3.4million per annum are beyond the Spanish club’s budget and any agreement would mean he would likely have to accept a significant wage cut.

Cavani is widely considered one of the best strikers of his generation, being known for his intelligent movement off the ball, clinical finishing, and heading ability. Having bagged 104 goals in three seasons with Napoli, he joined Paris Saint-Germain – with whom he won six Ligue 1 titles and scored 200 goals, more than any other player in the club’s history.
