Edinson Cavani breaks silence on Man Utd injury hell amid fan criticism

Manchester United's Edinson Cavani has finally spoken out about the extent of the injuries that have kept him sidelined of late, silencing those who questioned his attitude.

The Uruguay international hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since the February 8 and many have been public in how they believe that is due to his personal choice rather than because of a groin injury.

United boss Ralf Rangnick revealed before the Manchester Derby that Cavani, despite training in the days before the game, had ruled himself out of the crucial clash.

The German manager said: “Edi trained well in the last three days but, at the end, he didn’t feel quite well enough to be able to play.”

Rangnick's comments led to many to jump to the conclusion that the former Paris Saint-Germain wasn’t committed and was picking and choosing when he wanted to play.

But, speaking to the official Manchester United site, Cavani appears to have put those rumours to bed.

He explained: “I’ve been unfortunate to be out through injury, and for a longer period than I’m used to. I’ve never been used to spending this length of time on the sidelines. It’s something that I’m finding very difficult. Something which is very tough.

“Mentally, it’s not easy either, because when you’re not used to it, it really is extremely hard to take on board what is happening and seeing your teammates each game going out onto the pitch, either for training or to play in a match.

“And you can’t be joining them out there, it’s hard to take, and it’s really frustrating that you’re feeling like that, and it makes you a bit anxious and really keen to be wanting to be fit and ready as quickly as possible.”

United are currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League but have an almighty mission on their hands if they are to pip Arsenal to the final Champions League spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo has also been out over the past few weeks which has left Rangnick short of a striker to spearhead his attack.

But Cavani, who may be ready as soon as Saturday, explained: “I hope I can be ready very soon, maybe even for the Tottenham game, and then continue to be a part of everything that’s ahead of us.”

Fans have been public in how frustrated they have been with Cavani and the concept that he could be deciding when he does or doesn’t play, as has former United star Paul Parker.

The ex-England international recently told Sky Sports: “Ronaldo needs to score goals for him to be seen as doing a good job for United while Cavani, not really sure if he wants to play nobody really knows.

“Rangnick is trying his best to stick up for him in what he’s saying but it’s out there with the fans they aren’t sure he really wants to play for Man United at this given time.”

It remains to be seen when Cavani returns to the United team and overcomes his injury woes, whether his performances will convince the United faithful to give him their full support.
