Edinburgh Zoo hits back on TripAdvisor after tourist creeped out by 'staff in dark glasses'

Without doubt, Edinburgh Zoo is one of the city's best attractions and is perhaps even one of the most popular in the country.

Generally, families who go there to witness our world famous pandas or perhaps take in the penguin parade, come away having had a pretty positive experience. You don't get to witness scores of exotic animals wander around Edinburgh every afternoon.

We even put the zoo to the test recently, with our reporter going there for her first visit - and giving it a rave review.

But, as with anything in life, you can't always keep everyone happy 100% of the time.

And Edinburgh Zoo staff were forced to respond to a bizarre review left on TripAdvisor over the weekend, in which one guest complained about 'hiding animals' and, oddly, staff opting to wear sunglasses.

They also repeatedly claimed the zoo was 'dirty', that there wasn't much to see, while also criticising the zoo for being too hilly.

The guest also said the penguins should have been 'off limits', amid concerns over bird flu.

The review, which surprisingly gave the zoo three out of five stats, said: "[The zoo] was really bad. Was there on 30/4/22 and found it to be not great.

"Some areas could have been cleaner.

"We made the mistake of assuming we could eat there so expensive and not very clean. We left early and had food elsewhere.

"We found it uncomfortable when a worker was wandering around with dark glasses on and you could not see what he was watching we have young kids.

"Not a great deal to see and being on a hill a very hard walk for children.

"We thought the penguins would be off limits due to bird flu but little care on that side.

"Toilets were small and dirty with no cleaners. Food wrapping on ground and we found three dirty face masks and they are not even in force now. Very dirty place."

Meanwhile, the reviewer also suggested some of the animal pens were empty, before later in his feedback admitting 'it's not a bad zoo'.

They commented: "When I was a child I went there and it was very different and it has improved since then.

"We never took photos as when we saw pens animals were either hiding or all the pens were empty.

"I don’t think I’ll be back again this year. We’ll see if it’s a bit cleaner and a bit more open next year.

"It’s not a bad zoo. It’s just not good for us."

Yet the Edinburgh Zoo team were prompt in their response, suggesting that with over 2,500 animals on the site, there's plenty for people to see, while adding that some of the staff like to wear sunglasses when working outside in the sunshine.

Their response read: "We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience.

"Every purchase in our shops and cafes supports our wildlife conservation charity's work around the world, as well as helping to feed and care for our amazing animals. We will be sure to pass along your feedback regarding cleanliness. Our visitors are welcome to bring in their own picnics to enjoy too!

"Working outside in the bright sun all day, some of our wonderful staff do prefer to wear sunglasses when appropriate for the tasks they are completing. With over 2,500 amazing animals, from our bachelor giraffe herd, lion family and Scotland's only sloths, to cheeky meerkats and pygmy hippo family, there's lots to see.

"In regards to our penguins, please be assured we are following all avian flu protocols."
