Edinburgh workshop teaches dads how to style their daughters' hair

A workshop that teaches fathers how to manage their child’s long hair is moving back to in person sessions in Edinburgh.

The workshop has been previously held online for the past two years due to coronavirus restrictions and is finally hosting an in person event this month.

The next meeting is on April 30 and is completely free of charge. A £10 donation is recommended by attendee’s if they can afford it.

Dad’s Rock is a charity that primarily focuses on supporting dad’s to improve outcomes for children in Scotland.

This particular workshop is popular between dads and their daughters. Aiming to make hair styling a less stressful experience for both parent and child, it teaches dads the basics to keep hair clean and neat.

The class starts by teaching fathers how to care for long hair and offers advice on detangling and which products are suitable for children's hair care.

Trained staff will use model heads to demonstrate various popular hairstyles for long hair including ponytails, braids and even space buns.

Thomas Lynch is the Dads Rock Service Manager and co-founder. He said:

“It's a really great practical skill to be able to help Dads with as taking the time with your child's hair can be stressful and frustrating.

“Our workshop aims to strip away the stress and show Dads how it can be a great bonding time with your child, and that we have seen that at the end both Dads and kids can have something they are proud of.”

Dad’s Rock offers many other forms of support including music sessions, young dads meet and first aid.

Running since 2012 they have been helping new fathers around Scotland for a decade.

The charity is looking to branch out to offer sessions for mothers who may be interested in the hairstyle workshops too.

Hairstyle sessions are located in Leith on Duncan Place and the session in April is almost fully booked. Check availability here.
