Edinburgh woman says she is being targeted by bike thieves after spate of crime

An Edinburgh woman has shared an image of a burned out motorbike in Pilton Park as she says that bike thefts are getting out of control in the capital.

The local woman, who wishes to remain anonymous after her house was targeted twice by thieves that stole five push bikes, says that she came across the burned out wreck of a motorbike in the north Edinburgh park.

The charred remains of the vehicle could be seen laying next to a bench in the well used park that is popular with local children.

She says that this is one of six vehicles that she has seen in and around west Edinburgh since she moved to the area six years ago.

The woman says that she remembers being threatened by riders travelling at high speeds on a well used cycle path in the capital.

“I have lived here six years and use the Roseburn cycle path most days. I have seen at least one car, one van and four motorcycles burned out on the cycle path,” she said.

“I obviously don’t know they were stolen, but they have been passed by motorbikes on the cycle path when I was cycling by riders doing over 50mph which was terrifying.

“On one occasion a group of them went past me at night, and I screamed in fear, they came back for another pass and shouted at me and threw something which mercifully missed me.

“I did see some bike thieves on the cycle path once, and I chased them, which was rather exciting looking back as I managed to recover one bike.

She added: “My push bikes were stolen from our garage on Ferry Road a few years ago.

“The first lot they just forced the door open. The second time, after we had strengthened the door, they tore the roof off.

“I saw big guys with balaclavas at 2am on the garage roof with one of my bikes. I tried to chase them but they were gone by the time i got outside

“I reported both thefts to the police and got a visit for statements but nothing happened.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.05pm on Sunday, 4 June, police were called to a report of a damaged motorbike found in East Pilton Park. Enquiries are being carried out into this report.”
