Edinburgh weekend weather as snow and-5C chill to hit the capital next week

Edinburgh is set for freezing temperatures and snow flurries next week, as the capital prepares itself for some bitterly cold weather in March.

According to forecasters at BBC Weather, snow and sub-zero temperatures will hit Edinburgh from Monday, March 6. Lows of -5C begin on March 7, continuing through until Thursday, March 9.

However, this weekend will see some sunny intervals and light winds, with highs of 7C, and lows of 1C before further temperatures plummet on Monday. Saturday is set to be pleasant, with sunny spells, before a cloudy Sunday complete with showers.

Heavy snowshowers are expected by Friday, March 10, are the capital braces for a period of wintry weather.

The bitter wind and snow will spread across the east coast from the beginning of the week, and tail off by next weekend, according to BBC Weather.

Met Office meteorologists are also predicting extremely cold weather for the capital next week, with this weekend spelling a mild introduction to the bitter wintry spell.

Deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Chris Almond, said: “Although we’ve moved into meteorological Spring there will be a distinctly wintry feel to our weather next week.

"Very cold air will spread across the UK bringing snow showers even to sea level in the north on Monday and these snow showers could spread further south on Tuesday.

“With freezing overnight temperatures and the risk of ice it is likely weather warnings will be issued for Monday and Tuesday once the detail of potential impacts becomes clearer, so keep an eye on the Met Office forecast.”

England have also been issued a three-day alert for freezing temperatures next week - but Scotland has yet to be issued any form of warning for weather.

Today's forecast (March 3)

Any light showers at first soon dying out. Then it will be dry with clouds gradually breaking to give some sunshine during the day. Light winds. Maximum temperature 9C.

Long range UK forecast from March 7 - March 16

This period is expected to be characterised by winds from the north bringing cold conditions to most areas with widespread frost and ice. This will most likely result in wintry showers, these turning to more organised bands of snow at times in the east.

Temperatures overall will be below average but may gradually trend up through the period.
