Further north saw winds between 70 and 80 mph hit, with regions such as Aberdeen left without power.

Now, although the skies appear a little brighter this Monday morning (January 31), the weather in Edinburgh is set to become unsettled once more.

While there is no weather warning in place for Edinburgh this time, the wind will pick up to a strong speed along with a chilly feel in the air with temperatures sitting at just 5°C.

The Met Office reports that starting from tonight at 10pm the wind gusts will reach 31 and then jump to 38mph by midnight.

Then looking into Tuesday early morning, will start off as cloudy then brighten up with sunny intervals by 9am but that will be accompanied by gale force winds.

From 5am on Tuesday morning, wind gusts will hit 40 mph and they will continue to creep up through the morning and afternoon.

By 9am they will reach 43 and by 12pm on Tuesday February 1, they will peak at 45 mph and will remain there until it starts to die down slightly to 43 mph at 3pm.

Going into the evening, the gusts will start to ease each hour until settling in the 20's range by 9pm.

The Met Office forecasts Tuesday's weather for Edinburgh, Lothians and Borders as: "A mostly dry and bright day with some sunny intervals. The odd light shower mainly across the southwest, Windy with gales in places. Milder. Maximum temperature 11 °C".
