Edinburgh weather: Met Office issue with yellow warning for ice on Boxing Day

A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for the city of Edinburgh by the Met Office, running from Boxing Day until tomorrow (December 27).

After the wintry weather cascaded across Scotland on Christmas Day, ice has been left behind, and the Met Office has warned that it will be slippery underfoot. In terms of what to expect, this is what the forecasters had to say:

  • There will probably be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths leading to a greater chance of injuries or accidents
  • Patchy snow on higher routes, both from wintry showers this evening, and also on leading edge of rain early on Tuesday, making for somewhat difficult driving conditions

The warning has been set in place from 6pm today (December 26), until 10am on Tuesday, December 27. The ice will spread across Edinburgh, East Lothian and West Lothian.

The Met Office has released a five-day forecast for Edinburgh, highlighting the worst affected areas of the city in this wintry weather warning. Read on below to find out more.

Boxing Day's forecast

A cold day with sunny intervals and scattered wintry showers. Some lying snow on hills. Showers will become fewer and lighter this evening. Strong, gusty westerly winds this morning, easing later this afternoon. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Moving on to tonight, it will be dry for much of the evening with clear periods, a frost and icy patches. Thickening cloud will bring rain to Dumfries and Galloway by morning, along with strengthening southerly winds. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Tuesday, December 27 forecast

Cloudy with rain extending to all parts during the morning. Brighter conditions and a few showers following in the afternoon. Fresh south or southwest winds. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday, December 28 to Friday, December 30

An unsettled few days coming up. Rain, heavy at times on Wednesday, followed by blustery showers later Wednesday and Thursday with further rain on Friday. Cold and windy at times.
